Prisoners (2013) Review: How Far Would You Go to Protect Your Family?

Image

Used for review and commentary purposes. “A dark and gripping thriller about fear, desperation, and the dangerous choices people make when time is running out.” What would you do if someone you loved suddenly disappeared, and you believed the person responsible was standing right in front of you? That uncomfortable question sits at the center of Prisoners (2013), directed by Denis Villeneuve. On the surface, the movie is a mystery about two missing girls and the desperate search to find them. But underneath that mystery is something much darker: a story about what fear and uncertainty can do to ordinary people. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal approach the crisis from very different positions. One is a father who feels that every passing minute matters. The other is a d...

District 9 (2009) Review: A Sci-Fi Movie That Feels Uncomfortably Real

Image
District 9 (2009) movie poster. Source: Sony Pictures Releasing. Used for review and commentary purposes. District 9 takes a familiar science-fiction idea—aliens arriving on Earth—and turns it into something much more uncomfortable, realistic, and surprisingly human. What happens when visitors from another world arrive on Earth, but instead of being welcomed or feared as conquerors, they become unwanted outsiders? Neill Blomkamp's District 9 (2009) begins with a huge alien spacecraft hanging silently above Johannesburg, South Africa. That image sounds like the beginning of a traditional alien invasion movie, but this film quickly goes in a very different direction. The aliens are not powerful ...

The Irishman (2019) Review: A Powerful Story of Loyalty, Time, and Regret

Image
The Irishman (2019) • Netflix Original Martin Scorsese brings Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci together for a gangster story that becomes less about power and more about what remains after a lifetime of difficult choices. What happens when a life built on loyalty and violence finally becomes quiet? At first, The Irishman may look like familiar territory for Martin Scorsese. There are gangsters, powerful men, secret meetings, expensive restaurants, favors, threats, and people who understand that saying the wrong thing can be dangerous. But the longer I watched, the less the movie felt like a celebration of the gangster life. Instead, it began to feel like a story about time. People become older. Friendships change. P...

Extraction 2 (2023) Review: Bigger, Bolder, and More Intense

Image
Extraction 2 (2023) • Netflix Original Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake in a sequel that knows exactly what many viewers came to see: bold action, dangerous situations, and very little time to catch your breath. How do you make an action sequel feel bigger without simply adding more explosions? Extraction 2 has a pretty simple answer: put Tyler Rake in increasingly dangerous situations and keep pushing the action until you start wondering how much more punishment one man can possibly take. That may sound excessive, and sometimes it is. But that is also a big part of the fun. What impressed me most about this sequel was how bold the action was. The movie rarely seems satisfied with an ordinary fight or chase. Just when ...

Taxi Driver (1976) Review – Loneliness Behind the Wheel

Image
Taxi Driver (1976) movie poster. Source: Columbia Pictures. Used for review and commentary purposes. Some movies become old. Others simply become more uncomfortable with time. Taxi Driver (1976), directed by Martin Scorsese, is one of those films that seems to become even more unsettling with time. On the surface, it follows a lonely man driving a taxi through New York at night. But underneath that simple idea is a disturbing character study about isolation, anger, and what can happen when someone slowly loses his connection with the people around him. What stayed with me most was not the violence that the movie is famous for. It was the feeling of watching Travis Bickle become more isolated while convincing himself that he understands the world around him. That makes Taxi Driver uncomfortable, but also difficult to forget. ...

Extraction (2020) Review – A Rescue Mission That Never Slows Down

Image
Extraction (2020) movie poster. Source: Netflix. Used for review and commentary purposes. Some action movies spend a long time preparing for the big fight. Extraction does not seem very interested in waiting. Directed by Sam Hargrave and starring Chris Hemsworth, Extraction (2020) is a hard-hitting action thriller built around a dangerous rescue mission. The story is simple enough to follow, but the movie's real strength is the way it puts you close to the action and rarely gives you much time to relax. I especially enjoyed how the action becomes more intense as the movie moves toward its final stretch. The battle around the bridge was the sequence that stayed with me the most. Without giving away what happens, it feels like the danger, exhaustion, and pressure that have been building throughout the movie finally come together in one brutal confront...

The Departed (2006) Review – Two Moles, Two Worlds, and No One to Trust

Image
The Departed (2006) movie poster. Source: Warner Bros. Pictures. Used for review and commentary purposes. What happens when the police have a man inside the criminal world, while the criminals have a man inside the police? That simple but brilliant idea is at the center of The Departed (2006), directed by Martin Scorsese. Instead of asking us to follow only the police or only the criminals, the movie puts us on both sides at the same time. We know that each side has a hidden enemy, but the characters do not. This creates a different kind of suspense. The tension does not come only from guns, violence, or police chases. It comes from conversations, phone calls, suspicious looks, and the constant fear that someone may discover the truth. I found this idea especially interesting because the movie makes us watch two men living almost opposit...
