Extraction (2020) Review – A Rescue Mission That Never Slows Down

Some action movies spend a long time preparing for the big fight. Extraction does not seem very interested in waiting.

Directed by Sam Hargrave and starring Chris Hemsworth, Extraction (2020) is a hard-hitting action thriller built around a dangerous rescue mission. The story is simple enough to follow, but the movie's real strength is the way it puts you close to the action and rarely gives you much time to relax.

I especially enjoyed how the action becomes more intense as the movie moves toward its final stretch. The battle around the bridge was the sequence that stayed with me the most. Without giving away what happens, it feels like the danger, exhaustion, and pressure that have been building throughout the movie finally come together in one brutal confrontation.

1. A Simple Mission That Quickly Becomes Complicated

Chris Hemsworth plays Tyler Rake, a highly skilled mercenary who is hired to rescue Ovi, the kidnapped teenage son of an imprisoned crime lord. The mission takes him into Dhaka, Bangladesh, where powerful criminal forces make getting the boy out far more difficult than simply finding him.

That is about as much of the story as I recommend knowing before watching. Extraction works best when you discover the complications at the same time Tyler does. What begins as a professional rescue operation gradually becomes something much more personal and dangerous.

2. Chris Hemsworth Feels Different Here

Many viewers know Chris Hemsworth best as Thor, but Tyler Rake is a very different kind of character. He is quieter, more damaged, and much less interested in being a traditional hero.

Hemsworth's physical presence obviously fits the action, but I think the quieter moments are important too. Tyler carries emotional weight from his past, and that gives his relationship with Ovi more meaning than I expected from a movie that could easily have been nothing more than gunfights and explosions.

3. Action That Feels Close and Dangerous

The biggest reason to watch Extraction is its action direction. Sam Hargrave came from a stunt background, and you can feel that experience in the way the fights are staged. The camera often stays close to Tyler instead of simply cutting rapidly from one angle to another.

One extended sequence moves through vehicles, streets, buildings, gunfights, and hand-to-hand combat while creating the feeling of one continuous shot. It gives the action a sense of movement and urgency that makes you feel as if you are following the characters through the escape rather than watching safely from a distance.

The violence can be intense, so this will not be for everyone. But for viewers who enjoy realistic, physical action, the choreography is easily one of the movie's strongest qualities.

4. The Bridge Sequence Was My Favorite

For me, the most memorable part of the movie is the intense bridge sequence during the final stretch. I will avoid explaining who is involved or how the confrontation ends because that would take away too much from a first viewing.

What impressed me was the intensity of the sequence. By this point, the characters already feel physically exhausted, yet the situation becomes even more dangerous. Gunfire, constant movement, limited cover, and the narrow path across the bridge create a feeling that there is almost nowhere to escape.

It is a hardcore action sequence, but it does not feel completely disconnected from the story. The mission has become about more than completing a job, and that emotional pressure makes the action more effective.

5. Where the Movie Is Less Successful

Extraction is not a particularly complicated movie. Some supporting characters could have been developed more, and parts of the story feel familiar if you have watched many rescue or mercenary thrillers.

Fortunately, the movie understands what it does well. It keeps the story moving, gives Hemsworth a convincing action role, and builds several sequences that are easy to remember after the movie is over.

6. Final Verdict

Extraction may not reinvent the rescue-thriller story, but its action filmmaking gives it a strong identity. Chris Hemsworth is convincing as a physically powerful but emotionally damaged mercenary, and Sam Hargrave keeps the camera close enough to make many of the fights feel immediate and dangerous.

I would recommend it to viewers who enjoy movies such as John Wick or other fast, physical action thrillers. And if you enjoy the movie's earlier action scenes, the bridge sequence near the end gives the film one last major burst of intensity.

The story later continues in Extraction 2 (2023), which brings Sam Hargrave and Chris Hemsworth back for another action-heavy chapter. I will be reviewing the sequel separately, so I will leave its story and surprises for that review.

7. My Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

I gave Extraction 4 out of 5 stars mainly because of its excellent action choreography, Chris Hemsworth's committed performance, and the intensity of sequences such as the final bridge battle. The movie loses some points because the basic story and several supporting characters are not especially deep or original. Still, as an action thriller, it knows exactly what kind of experience it wants to deliver and does that very well.
