Extraction 2 (2023) Review: Bigger, Bolder, and More Intense
Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake in a sequel that knows exactly what many viewers came to see: bold action, dangerous situations, and very little time to catch your breath.
How do you make an action sequel feel bigger without simply adding more explosions?
Extraction 2 has a pretty simple answer: put Tyler Rake in increasingly dangerous situations and keep pushing the action until you start wondering how much more punishment one man can possibly take.
That may sound excessive, and sometimes it is. But that is also a big part of the fun. What impressed me most about this sequel was how bold the action was. The movie rarely seems satisfied with an ordinary fight or chase. Just when I thought a sequence had reached its limit, something else happened that made the situation even more dangerous.
The story itself is fairly straightforward, but Extraction 2 understands its greatest strength. It wants to put the audience close to the danger and make every punch, chase, explosion, and narrow escape feel immediate.
🛡️ Spoiler-Light Review: This review discusses the basic setup, characters, and style of the action, but avoids major plot developments and the ending.
1. A Simple Mission That Quickly Becomes Anything But Simple
After the events of the first Extraction, Tyler Rake is still dealing with the physical and emotional damage left behind. Chris Hemsworth returns as the highly skilled mercenary, but this time there is a little more weight behind the tough exterior.
Rake is eventually given another dangerous assignment: rescue the family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held. It sounds like the kind of mission Tyler has handled before, but getting them out is only the beginning.
I actually liked that the movie keeps the basic story relatively easy to follow. There are family conflicts and personal motivations behind the mission, but the plot does not spend too much time trying to become a complicated political thriller. It gives Tyler a destination, puts enormous obstacles in his way, and lets the action take over.
2. The Action Is the Real Star
This is where Extraction 2 really won me over.
There are plenty of movies filled with gunfights and explosions, but Extraction 2 often tries to make you feel as if you are trapped inside the chaos with Tyler. The camera follows characters through fights, narrow spaces, vehicles, and crowds without constantly giving the audience a comfortable place to stop.
The prison sequence is probably the best example. I will avoid describing exactly what happens, because discovering the escalation is part of the experience. What begins as a dangerous rescue continues to grow into something much larger. Fights lead into chases, new threats appear, and the movie keeps finding another way to raise the pressure.
Later sequences involving vehicles and a moving train continue that same approach. Some moments clearly choose spectacle over realism, but I honestly did not mind. I was having too much fun watching them.
"The action is fearless. It keeps asking, 'What can we do next?' and then actually tries to do it."
3. Chris Hemsworth Makes Tyler Rake Easy to Root For
Chris Hemsworth once again looks completely comfortable as Tyler Rake. He has the physical presence needed for the action, but the performance works better because Rake does not feel completely invincible.
He gets hurt. He becomes exhausted. His past still affects him. That makes the character more interesting than a hero who simply walks through every fight without consequences.
The movie also gives Golshifteh Farahani's Nik Khan much more to do. She feels like a capable partner rather than someone simply standing behind the main character, and her involvement makes several of the movie's biggest sequences stronger.
What I especially liked is that Nik does not feel like a character who exists only to support Tyler. She brings her own confidence and intensity to the dangerous situations around them, which makes the team dynamic more convincing.
4. A Fun Detail Behind One of the Movie's Most Intimidating Characters
There is also a fun detail that some viewers may not know.
Levan Saginashvili, who appears as Vakhtang, is not simply a very large actor hired to look intimidating. He is a professional arm-wrestling champion from Georgia, widely known in the sport for his extraordinary size and strength.
Even if you know nothing about professional arm wrestling, his physical presence is difficult to miss. Learning who he really is afterward makes his appearance in the movie even more entertaining.
5. Bigger Action, but Not Necessarily a Bigger Story
Of course, Extraction 2 is not perfect.
The story mostly exists to move the characters from one dangerous situation to another. There is an emotional side involving Tyler's past and the family he is trying to protect, but I would not say the story is as memorable as the movie's spectacular set pieces.
There are also moments when Tyler seems capable of surviving almost anything. If you want strict realism, some scenes may push things too far.
But I think the movie knows exactly what kind of experience it wants to provide. It is not trying to be a quiet, realistic crime drama. It is trying to deliver a large-scale action thriller with enough character and emotion to make the danger matter.
6. Is Extraction 2 Better Than the First Movie?
For me, the sequel feels more confident about what makes this series entertaining.
The first movie introduced Tyler Rake and established the brutal style of the action. Extraction 2 takes that foundation and pushes it further. The locations feel bigger, the set pieces are more ambitious, and Tyler's personal history receives more attention.
Viewers looking for a much deeper story may not find a dramatic change, but if the action was your favorite part of the first movie, this sequel gives you plenty of reasons to keep watching.
💡 Who Should Watch Extraction 2?
If you enjoyed the first Extraction, modern stunt-heavy action movies, or films where the hero is constantly pushed into seemingly impossible situations, Extraction 2 is an easy recommendation.
If you mainly want a complicated plot or deep character drama, the story may feel a little simple. But if you came for action, the movie delivers.
Final Verdict
Extraction 2 does not reinvent the action genre, but it does something almost as important: it understands what it does well and goes all in.
The story is simple and some of Tyler's survival skills require a generous suspension of disbelief, but the movie's ambitious set pieces, energetic camera work, strong physical performances, and relentless pace kept me entertained.
I give it 4.5 out of 5 because some of the stunt work and large-scale sequences are among the most exciting I have seen in a modern Netflix action movie, and the sequel successfully makes Tyler Rake's world feel bigger and more dangerous. I stopped just short of a perfect score because the story is still fairly straightforward and the spectacle is ultimately more memorable than the plot. As pure action entertainment, however, Extraction 2 is very hard to ignore.
