The Irishman (2019) Review: A Powerful Story of Loyalty, Time, and Regret

The Irishman (2019) • Netflix Original Martin Scorsese brings Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci together for a gangster story that becomes less about power and more about what remains after a lifetime of difficult choices. What happens when a life built on loyalty and violence finally becomes quiet? At first, The Irishman may look like familiar territory for Martin Scorsese. There are gangsters, powerful men, secret meetings, expensive restaurants, favors, threats, and people who understand that saying the wrong thing can be dangerous. But the longer I watched, the less the movie felt like a celebration of the gangster life. Instead, it began to feel like a story about time. People become older. Friendships change. P...

Extraction 2 (2023) Review: Bigger, Bolder, and More Intense

Extraction 2 (2023) • Netflix Original Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake in a sequel that knows exactly what many viewers came to see: bold action, dangerous situations, and very little time to catch your breath. The movie rarely seems satisfied with an ordinary fight or chase. Just when ...

The Whisper Man (2026), directed by James Ashcroft and adapted from Alex North's novel, works best for me when it treats its crime mystery as something more personal than a search for a criminal. Beneath the investigation is a story about fathers and sons, unresolved family distance, and the uncomfortable way the past can return to shape the present. Adam Scott plays Tom Kennedy, a widowed crime writer whose young son disappears. Desperate for help, Tom turns to his estranged father Pete Willis, played by Robert De Niro, a retired detective whose past is connected to an earlier case involving a notorious killer known as the Whisper Man. That connection gives the movie two kinds of tension at once. There is the immediate mystery surrounding a missing child, but there is also the quieter tensi...
